Combating Nasal Dryness with CPAP: Here’s What You Can Do
Most sleep apnea patients are typically recommended treatment for their condition in the form of CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy that pushes pressurized and moistened air into the user’s airway. When the therapy is working, it eliminates the possibility of airway obstruction and allows for uninterrupted sleep.
However, nasal dryness with CPAP therapy is common because the airflow can be irritating to the air passages. If this is a struggle you’re experiencing, read on for tips on how to combat nasal dryness with CPAP.

How CPAP Humidifiers Work
Your CPAP machine is set up to deliver pressurized and slightly humid air directly through your mask. The pressurized air passes first through the humidification chamber full of distilled water—this ensures cleanliness—and then through the tubing. The nasal passageway is unable to handle humidifying the increased airflow on its own, and the ensuing dryness leads to small tears, cracked lips and other symptoms, which is why the humidifier is a necessity when sleeping with a CPAP mask.
Check Your Mask Fit
If you’re experiencing dryness, there may be a simple fix. Your CPAP mask might be leaking, which means you’re exposed to outside air that has not been moistened by the humidifier. The combination of the air pressure and the dryness can negatively affect your nasal passage and also render your CPAP therapy useless. Check how well your mask fits and research accessories that can improve comfort and fit.
Apply a Moisturizer
There are several nasal moisturizers created specifically for sleep apnea patients, but you can try any option that is not petroleum-based. Be aware that some moisturizers cause CPAP masks to break down faster, so experts recommend signing up with a CPAP subscription service to deliver new masks on a set schedule.
Add Some Heat
Many patients prefer a heated humidifier, but it is especially important to use if you sleep in a cold environment. Cold air causes mucosal drying and rebound congestion in the nasal passageway. There are two options for adding heat: heated humidifiers and heated tubing. Warm air is gentler on the highly vascular nasal passage, so dryness is easier to avoid.
Try a New Mask Type
The root of your dryness issue might be that you’re not using the right mask for your sleep style. It could be a mask leak or a high pressure setting that is better suited to a full face mask over a nasal pillow. Another common problem is that air travels out of the mouth without first passing through the lungs, and dryness occurs in the mouth as well as the nose. This is why many sleep apnea patients find it helpful to participate in a sleep study and sleep with different mask styles.
There are many masks and sizes to try, and it is important to find one that allows you to take advantage of the health benefits of treating sleep apnea with CPAP therapy.
