An estimated 18 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, a condition that is caused by blockage of the upper airway while asleep. It is highly treatable with CPAP therapy, giving patients the ability to breathe more freely and let their bodies fully recharge through sleep.

However, because sleeping with a CPAP machine isn’t always the most convenient, it’s natural to worry about developing sleep apnea.

These are the sleep apnea symptoms to look for before consulting a doctor.

Symptoms Shown While Sleeping

It’s harder to recognize sleep apnea symptoms that you’re showing while asleep, but they can be reported by a partner or a specialist during a sleep study.

Snoring

There are many reasons why you could be snoring, including a deviated septum, sleep deprivation, sleep position or alcohol consumption. Chronic (and loud) snoring, on the other hand, is the most common symptom of sleep apnea.

Interrupted Breathing

Snoring followed by a silent period of not breathing is typically a sign of sleep apnea, as this means the upper airway becomes blocked during that period of interrupted breathing. Your brain recognizes the inability to breathe and wakes you up so you can unblock the airway, but it is such a quick process that you probably won’t remember it.

Choking or Gasping

You might also experience choking or gasping for air after emitting a snore, which is simply a more disruptive form of interrupted breathing. This pattern can repeat itself five or more times each hour, all night, impairing your ability to reach the deep, restorative phases of sleep.

Daytime Symptoms

Because sleep quality affects your day, these symptoms will likely be what you notice first, and sometimes they’ve even been linked to your diet, exercise patterns and lifestyle habits.

Fatigue

The inability to recharge during sleep has long term effects, notably daytime fatigue. If you’re feeling abnormally sleepy during the day or while driving, think back on how often this plagues you. Chronic fatigue is a symptom of sleep apnea, and it’s highly noticeable so you can get treated as soon as possible.

Changes in Mood

Long term exhaustion from sleep apnea will alter your mood, making you irritable, depressed or stressed. It also decreases libido and makes you more prone to poor decision-making.

Memory Loss

Sleep apnea can make you more forgetful, as your brain doesn’t have that time to solidify new memories during REM sleep. If you’re having trouble with remembering details, it might be time to talk to your doctor.

Other Complications

Untreated sleep apnea can lead to a number of other health conditions and complications that affect you and those around you.

High Blood Pressure

During sleep, sleep apnea patients either stop breathing or experience disruptive breathing multiple times every hour all night long. These episodes also cause sudden drops in blood oxygen levels, which increases your risk of high blood pressure. If you already have heart disease, this can also cause irregular heartbeats.

Liver Problems

Sleep apnea patients are more likely to have liver function problems and show abnormal results if their livers are tested. If you have sleep apnea, you liver is also more likely to show signs of scarring.

Sleep-Deprived Partners

Unless your partner is a deep sleeper and won’t be roused during your episodes, he or she will experience the same daytime effects of interrupted sleep.

Memory Problems

New studies have also linked obstructive sleep apnea with memory problems, furthering the reasons why you should consider talking your physician as soon as possible if you think that you’re exhibiting any symptoms.
