Want Peace & Quiet at Night? These CPAP Machines are Whisper Silent
Adjusting to sleeping with a CPAP machine is no easy task, but it is a reality for the millions of Americans who have been diagnosed with sleep apnea. This fairly common sleep disorder occurs when there is blockage of the airway during sleep, interrupting both normal breathing and a restorative sleep cycle. Sleep doctors, therefore, prescribe these patients CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy to keep the airway open so patients can return to restful sleep.
Noisy CPAP machines, however, can pose problems. Users may not be able to fall asleep without their usual peace and quiet. They also might be at risk of waking up during the night in response to the machine’s sounds. This is why noise-sensitive CPAP patients should look for quiet CPAP machines while putting together their equipment setups.
If you’re someone who needs minimal noise to get a restful night’s sleep, try one of these whisper silent CPAP machines.

Benefits of a Quiet CPAP Machine
When using a quiet CPAP machine, sleep apnea patients are more likely to have blissful, uninterrupted sleep that restores and rejuvenates them as it’s supposed to. In fact, there are numerous health benefits of CPAP therapy.
Successful CPAP therapy protects against health risks including strokes, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease and irregular heartbeats. Untreated sleep apnea can also lead to type 2 diabetes because it causes glucose intolerance and insulin resistance. If you’re using a noisy CPAP machine that interrupts your rest just as much as sleep apnea does, you don’t reap the rewards of undergoing CPAP therapy in the first place.
Quiet CPAP machines also prevent hearing loss. Sleep apnea patients are 90% more at risk for hearing loss due to noise trauma from snoring, and a loud machine won’t make this any better. Finally, a restful sleep will lower the risk of getting into an accident during the day, especially while driving.
Whisper Silent CPAP Machines for a Quiet Night’s Sleep
Fortunately for sleep apnea patients, CPAP machine manufacturers understand their plight and design their machines to run quieter than 30 decibels, which is comparable noise-wise to a whisper or rustling leaves. Still, there are some models on the market that are even quieter.
The Philips Respironics DreamStation Auto CPAP machine is one of the newest machines on the market today, and it runs as quietly as 25.8 decibels, even at high air pressure settings.
The ResMed AirSense 10 Auto CPAP machine is a top performer that minimizes turbulence and is nearly silent. It also syncs with a mobile app to provide a nightly sleep score and sleep coaching.
Another ResMed machine, the AirMini Travel CPAP machine emits only 25 decibels of sound when connected to the AirFit N20 mask or the P10 mask. This is the quietest travel CPAP machine currently available.
Finally, the Philips Respironics DreamStation Go is slightly louder at 30 decibels but can connect to any mask and deliver the same level of performance. This still makes the machine quieter than a library and is still a “soft” noise level according to the American Academy of Audiology.
Noisy CPAP Machine? Try This First
Sleep apnea patients should be aware that even the quietest CPAP machines will still produce a certain amount of noise—at least until the manufacturers discover a way to make machines truly silent. If you find your CPAP machine is louder than you prefer, first try placing it farther away from your or on the ground where the noise can be dampened by distance.
Additionally, it will be helpful to make sure the entire setup is clean. Dust and debris can accumulate in the filter and lodge itself in the motor, and a dirty motor is a loud motor. Change your CPAP filters as directed (more often if you have pets or live in a dusty area) and keep up with the daily cleansing of your equipment. A little work can go a long way.
One last thing to check: the water level in the humidifier. When it’s too low, the device starts to make a bubbling sound, but it goes away as soon as the humidifier is refilled.
