Back Sleepers
Sleep apnea is caused by obstruction of the airway during sleep, and the unfortunate reality for back sleepers is that they are putting themselves most at risk by sleeping on their backs. Gravity pulls the tongue back and down, which then blocks the airway.
However, the one advantage back sleepers have is that they have more options for mask styles. Full face masks are less likely to be knocked loose, breaking the seal and letting in unfiltered and unpressurized air. Similarly, less invasive options like nasal masks and nasal pillows more easily stay in place and provide the CPAP therapy patients need.
Side Sleepers
Side sleepers may be susceptible to neck pain, but they are less prone to gravity-induced airway obstruction than back sleepers. This gives them an advantage in that their sleep apnea symptoms are likely to be less frequent, but they have fewer freedoms in choosing a CPAP mask.
Experts recommend that side sleepers use a nasal pillow mask rather than a nasal mask or a full face mask. Nasal pillow masks are comfortable and loose while still being secure, so it will stay in place even during normal body shifts during sleep. The comfort factor also eases anxiety, which means less tossing and turning at night and, therefore, fewer incidents in which the CPAP mask could be knocked loose.
Stomach Sleepers
Sleep apnea patients who sleep on their stomachs, like side sleepers, do not experience gravity’s effect on their symptoms. While this is a positive outlook, it makes finding a CPAP mask to accommodate your sleep preferences more difficult.
Many stomach sleepers find success with nasal masks and nasal pillows, especially those with tubing that stays out of the way. However, using a full face mask is not impossible because CPAP pillows are designed to accommodate them.
Sleep Apnea Patients with Claustrophobia
Anxiety is a major factor to consider when choosing the right CPAP mask for how you sleep. Your comfort level will affect how well you sleep, and less tossing and turning means less risk of your CPAP mask being knocked loose.
It is common for sleep apnea patients to realize they have mild to moderate claustrophobia when they put on their CPAP masks. This is why if you know you have claustrophobia, it might be wise to avoid full face masks, if possible. (Those who breathe through their mouths during sleep should be using a full face mask to ensure the pressurized air is delivered.)
Whatever your situation and sleep style, it’s important to find a mask that you can incorporate into your daily life.
