Sleep Apnea Does not Indicate Higher Risk

There is no conclusive link between sleep apnea and COVID-19 that indicates those who suffer from the sleep disorder are at higher risk for contracting the novel coronavirus. However, there are risk factors for COVID-19 that, when paired with sleep apnea, make you more vulnerable. Those over age 60 and those who smoke are susceptible to the virus. Obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart or lung disease are all signs that you may be at greater risk. Additionally, conditions and medications that compromise the immune system increase vulnerability.

You Can Still Visit Sleep Doctors Virtually

If you are experiencing symptoms of sleep apnea, such as chronic snoring and daytime fatigue, contact your primary doctor, who can refer you to a sleep specialist for a virtual visit. The sleep specialist will ask about your sleep habits and sleep history, and they may inquire about your diet and exercise, if applicable. You’ll need three items for the visit: a flashlight so the specialist can examine your nose and mouth, a tape measure to determine your waist and neck circumference and a device to check your blood pressure. After your visit, the sleep specialist may recommend you complete a sleep study.

The FDA has not Approved Self-Cleaning CPAP Machines

We get it—CPAP machines require a lot of attention, and the daily recommended cleaning can feel like a chore. That’s why some manufacturers have built “self-cleaning” CPAP machines. They may sound appealing, but it’s important that sleep apnea patients know the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has yet to approve a self-cleaning machine. Especially during a global pandemic, it’s wise to undertake the cleaning yourself so you’ll know it’s been done correctly.

COVID-19 Patients may Continue CPAP Therapy

There is no evidence that using a CPAP machine drives the coronavirus farther into the lungs or worsens infection. If you develop symptoms of—or test positive for—COVID-19, contact your sleep specialist for guidance on how to move forward. You’ll likely be able to continue with your CPAP therapy because quality sleep boosts your immune system. The specialist will just strongly encourage you to self-quarantine while using your machine because there is a higher risk for transmission from mask leaks or the exhalation port. Be sure to also sanitize high-touch surfaces in your recovery room to avoid transmission this way.

Boiled Water Can Replace Distilled Water

Distilled water is the preferred option for your CPAP machine’s humidifier, but it can be hard to find with the widespread household product stockouts. If you’re in a pinch, you can use tap water or filtered water that has been boiled, but it will have a higher mineral content than distilled water. Be sure to clean your humidifier more often to avoid mineral deposit buildup if this is the case.

Sleep Is Your Strongest Weapon Against COVID-19

Though it’s natural to have anxiety about a spreading virus and a world of unknowns, one thing you can control is good sleep. Sleep is a natural immunity booster and should be prioritized, which is why many doctors recommend continuing CPAP therapy even when a patient is sick. Do your best to rest and relax so your body can recover while you sleep.
