Is Sleep Apnea Curable?

As of right now, there is no cure for sleep apnea. It can be managed with CPAP therapy or other treatments, but in most instances, it will not go away. This is because many risk factors associated with sleep apnea are largely hereditary. Skull shape, face shape, body fat proportion and muscle characteristics are all genetic traits that are passed on within families. Age and biological sex are other factors out of our control. Men over 40 tend to be more at risk for sleep apnea, as are post-menopausal women. The closest “cure” for sleep apnea involves surgery, but it is incredibly invasive and requires further treatment in the future if the tissue does not heal properly.

Does Pregnancy Affect the Risk of Developing Sleep Apnea?

Though there is no conclusive evidence that pregnancy increases the risk of developing sleep apnea, pregnant women are more susceptible to disordered sleep. This is due to three main factors: hormonal changes, physical changes and emotional changes. Pregnant women can experience anxiety and daytime drowsiness, which disrupt nighttime sleep. Increased frequency of urination also results in interrupted sleep. As a result, 78% of women report poor quality of sleep during pregnancy, even if they don’t develop sleep apnea.

Is Sleep Deprivation in Teens a Sign of Sleep Apnea?

Teenagers’ sleep needs and their schedules rarely align. The National Sleep Foundation has found that teens need more than nine hours of sleep per night during this critical period of growth. Homework, extracurriculars and social activities, however, tend to cut into their precious sleep time. Though teens may be sleep deprived, it is rarely because of sleep apnea. Sleep deprivation is its own separate serious concern and can cause exhaustion, impacted responsiveness and even mental illness. Worried parents can limit food and screen time before bed to help improve their teens’ sleep quality and minimize risk of sleep deprivation.

Do Natural Sleep Aids Really Work?

Sleep apnea patients may find it difficult to adjust to CPAP therapy, especially later in life when it is harder to form new habits. Many turn to natural sleep aids, which are proven to improve sleep quality. Aromatherapy and certain teas can boost mood and reduce stress and pain, whereas meditation and select foods promote sleep. Adding in natural sleep aids to your routine can be helpful, but preferred methods will vary by patient.

Can Sleep Apnea Cause Strokes?

There is overwhelming evidence that sleep apnea, even in its most mild form, increases the risk of stroke. Any time the airway is blocked, the body is not getting the oxygen it needs. Decreased oxygen in the bloodstream can then lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or stroke. There is a wide range of post-stroke complications from impaired senses to paralysis. It depends on the area of the brain that was affected.

What Happens if I Stop Sleep Apnea Treatment?

Without a cure for sleep apnea, patients can expect their sleep interruptions to return if they stop treatment. Sleep apnea can usually only be managed. CPAP therapy has made leaps and bounds in recent years to make patients’ experiences as pleasant as possible. This makes it easier to continue with the therapy throughout life. The latest masks are comfortable on the face, and the machines are whisper quiet to cause the least amount of disruption possible.
