Before Getting Started

After diagnosing your condition, your doctor will provide you with a prescription so you can purchase a CPAP machine to start therapy. The prescription, which will never need to be renewed, will detail the pressure setting you’ll use for your machine. This is determined based on the results of your sleep study.

See a Sleep Specialist

Before settling on your supplies, you should seek one-on-one time with a sleep specialist. Your prescription from your doctor will include specific settings for your CPAP machine, which a sleep specialist will be able to help you understand, as well as recommend the right machine and mask for you. Visiting a specialist in person, if possible, will also allow you to build a relationship with an expert so you have a trusted place to go if you have questions about the therapy.

You’ll probably have plenty of your own questions, but here are some key topics to discuss with a sleep specialist:

  • Cover your CPAP prescription and doctor recommendations
  • Talk about mask types, sleep style and if you have any allergies
  • Discuss what helps or hinders you from getting a good night sleep

How Your CPAP Supplier will Help

This depends on your supplier, but most of them can help with different services and components, including the following:

  • Making sure you’re using your machine as prescribed
  • Verifying your CPAP machine equipment is properly working
  • Are you comfortable? The supplier might ask if you’re having issues with claustrophobia or discomfort.
  • Have you seen an improvement in your sleep quality? What about your attitude, mood and quality of life?

The supplier is there to support you throughout your treatment and make it as easy as possible. For added convenience, be sure to sign up for a CPAP subscription so new supplies arrive at your doorstep on the recommended schedule.

Finding the Right CPAP Mask for You

Finding the right mask is imperative to making your CPAP therapy as comfortable as possible. If your mask is too clunky or too much of a hassle, you might be less likely to use it and get the treatment you need.

There are three common masks for CPAP therapy: Nasal pillow masks, nasal masks and full face masks. Nasal pillow masks use two soft silicone “pillows” that go inside your nostrils. Nasal masks are the most popular in CPAP therapy. They come in silicone, gel or cloth styles that are held in place by a forehead strap. Lastly, full face masks cover the nose and mouth. They are a great option for mouth breathers and those with high-pressure settings. For more information, don’t miss our guide to choosing the right CPAP mask for you.

Features to Consider

Your CPAP therapy will only be successful if you use it continuously and it’s comfortable. There are some features you can consider so you can have the easiest experience. Some machines have a built-in humidifier that can help your nose and mouth from drying out. It’s one of the most essential features for CPAP users. Another feature might be the size of the machine. If you travel, you’ll have to bring your machine with you. Portable and lightweight machines might be your best bet.

After purchase

Sleep specialists will be able to fit your mask and set your machine to the prescribed pressure settings so you’re ready to go. After you get home, try it out! If it’s uncomfortable, reach out to your medical equipment supplier who should be able to help you solve your problem.
