The Difference Between a Full-Face CPAP Mask & Nasal Pillow
Sleep apnea is a condition that affects roughly 22 million Americans in varying degrees. One method for easing the symptoms of the condition is CPAP therapy, which uses continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) to help the patient maintain normal breathing patterns during sleep.
There are many parts to a CPAP machine, and some of them are customizable so you can make the most out of your therapy in terms of quality and comfort. While some options are customizable in terms of aesthetics, more importantly, you can choose a CPAP mask that accommodates your sleep style and other needs.
We have a guide explaining the types of CPAP masks, but it is worth further exploring the major differences between full-face masks and nasal pillows, two of the most popular options.

Full-Face CPAP Mask
When you think about the stereotypical CPAP machine setup, you probably think of the full-face mask that sits over the patient’s airways and is rather large and clunky. While some patients find these masks uncomfortable, they’re perfect for anyone who sleeps on his or her back or anyone who suffers from claustrophobia, as this is a non-invasive option that sits on the face rather than inside an airway.
Full-face masks are also helpful for mouth breathers or anyone experiencing allergies that make breathing through the nose difficult. The structure allows for a tighter seal, so patients who require a high air pressure setting for their CPAP therapy can benefit from a full-face mask as well.
Patients should be aware that full-face CPAP masks can be jostled during active sleep, cause eye dryness from air escaping the top of the mask and hard to wear at the same time as glasses.
CPAP Nasal Pillow
Nasal pillows are a popular choice for patients who have low to moderate air pressure requirements because they are more compact and give you a greater field of vision. While full-face masks make it difficult to read or watch television before bed, nasal pillows stay out of sight because they sit at the nostril opening and provide airflow that way.
For active sleepers, nasal pillows also offer more of a range of motion without risking breaking the seal. Facial hair is another factor to consider, as patients with facial hair can benefit from nasal pillows because they have a lesser risk of disrupting airflow.
The drawback of nasal pillow has to do with direct airflow of pressured air into the nostrils, which causes discomfort in some patients and nasal dryness—including bleeding—in others.
Finding the Right CPAP Mask for You
The success of your CPAP therapy is dependent upon having the setup that works best for you. This means trying all your options in different sizes and with necessary accessories like chin straps and/or headgear when choosing the perfect CPAP mask for you. While the process can be discouraging if you don’t find your perfect fit right away, you’ll find it’s worth the effort to get your restful sleep back.
