Use These Methods to Sleep Better When Using a CPAP Machine
If you suffer from sleep apnea, you’re already familiar with CPAP supplies. One of the hardest parts of treating this disorder is compliance. The most difficult aspect of treatment, aside from having easy access to the masks, tubes and the machine you need, is sleeping with a CPAP mask. For newcomers, wearing one of these masks at night can feel like an uphill battle. It may result in you tossing and turning or finding certain sleeping positions uncomfortable. But the good news is that CPAP masks come in a variety of sizes and shapes and fits. This means that with a little bit of due diligence, you can find the perfect fit.
Monthly CPAP Club delivers all the CPAP supplies you need every 3 months for a set monthly fee. Just choose your mask, and we’ll add free tubing, filters and a cushion with free shipping. Get started today. Plans from $25/month.
How to Get Accustomed to Sleeping with a CPAP Mask
One of the more common issues people have is feeling claustrophobic about wearing the CPAP mask. Getting used to the mask blowing pressurized air into your face and being affixed to your head can take some time.
But there are ways to get around this:
- Consider using a nasal pillow mask. These are smaller, lighter masks that don’t feel as heavy on your face and work by creating a seal at the base of your nose around your nostrils. They use two inserted prongs to deliver the air and are less obstructing.
- When testing out new CPAP masks, read reviews first on the size and fit. You’d be surprised at how many online reviews you can find and how many users are diligent about sharing whether a mask feels too confining. A little bit of research can turn you on to certain brands that will work best for you.
- Get used to the mask by wearing it around your house during the day, unplugged from the machine of course. Doing so will help your subconscious better adapt to the weight, fit and feel of the mask, so it feels less obstructing at night.
- Slowly adjust the air pressure when you get into bed. Consider wearing your mask as you watch an evening show, read a book or browse the web on your phone or tablet. Let the air pressure build up steadily, so you can get a sounder night’s sleep.
Other Helpful CPAP Tips
- Bear in mind that it can take a while to become accustomed to the fit and feel of any mask. Think of this like any other habit you are trying to make or break. It takes about 21 days to make a habit. So, start that habit out by getting used to wearing your mask at odd times and at night. In no time at all, you’ll forget it's even on your head when you go to bed.
- Make sure you monitor your weight and body, as even subtle changes can cause for discomfort in a fit. Loose-fitting masks and those that are too tight can become troublesome to wear. Thankfully, you can easily remedy this by increasing or decreasing the fit of the masks you buy.
- Make CPAP part of your daily routine. Certainly, it can be frustrating knowing that you have to use a CPAP machine when you go to bed every night. But take the time to remind yourself that this is for the betterment of your health, a good night’s rest and consideration for a partner that may be sleeping next to you in bed.
- If the air pressure is bothering you, there may be a solution. Newer CPAP machines have a “ramp” setting that starts the air softly and slowly increases pressure until achieving the prescribed setting. This helps you fall asleep faster and you can more easily get used to the air pressure buildup. You should also explore your potions with BiPAP and C-Flex machines, which use sensors to detect when you are exhaling air, so they can balance air pressure against that to make it more comfortable.
- Combating dryness is made easier with newer technology. Modern CPAP machines often also have a heated humidifier feature. This helps retain the moisture in your nostrils and mouth, so you don’t wake up with cotton mouth or dry skin at the base of your nose. If your CPAP machine has a built-in humidifier and you’re still suffering from dryness, consider using a saline nasal spray before you go to bed. You can also talk to your doctor about prescribed sprays that may help, too.
- If you find that the sound of your CPAP machine is keeping you up, you should consider upgrading. The newer machines are whisper silent and more energy efficient, and they boast a host of new features that will have you sleeping better at night.
- For those who are struggling with tubing getting in the way, consider specialized CPAP pillows that have cutouts on the sides for tubes. You can feed the tubes through these cutouts, so they don’t get in the way when you’re lying prone.
Remember, patient compliance is the most important part of treating sleep apnea. If you’re diligent, resourceful and stay on top of the latest trends and technology, you can reduce the impact that this disorder has on your life.
