CPAP Masks for Side Sleepers

The most common complaint about CPAP masks from people that sleep on their side is that the mask becomes dislodges when pressed against the pillow.  Generally, patients report CPAP masks that are flexible and have cloth covering or surface where the mask connects to the face.  Many side sleeper CPAP patients find a CPAP mask that fits under the nose to be best performing and most secure throughout the night.

The CPAP mask that fits best for you will typically vary depending on the exact sleep position.  We put together a guide of common side sleeping positions and our recommended mask for that position.

The Fetal Position

The fetal sleeping position is the most common way for people to sleep.  This is best described as sleeping on your side with your arms curled up in front of your chest or near your head and your knees bent with the legs together.  A 2003 study by the Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service found that 41% of people slept in the fetal position.

One of the best reviewed masks for CPAP patients that sleep in the fetal position is the Philips Respironics Nuance & Nuance Pro Nasal Pillow Mask.  It is designed with options for a silicone or fabric frame that provides support with minimal face and head contact.  Most patients report the under the nose design stays securely in place throughout the night.

Yearner and The Log Positions

The same 2003 study found the 2nd and 3rd most common sleeping positions were the Yearner and the Log positions.  You can see both pictured above.  The most important consideration in selecting a CPAP mask for these sleeping positions is the security and flexibility of the frame.  Both positions will put some pressure on the side of the frame as it is pressed into the pillow.  This is especially important to consider if you frequently move around while you sleep as well.

The ResMed AirFit™ N30i is one of the most popular and reliable CPAP masks for people that sleep in these positions.  The unique design of a flexible frame that is also the tubing allows for air to flow through either side of the mask.  It also features a unique nasal cradle that sits comfortably under your nose.
