How to Choose the Perfect CPAP Mask for You
Finding the right CPAP mask is arguably the most important part of treating sleep apnea. Your mask ensures you’re receiving proper CPAP therapy without discomfort, leakage or interruption of your sleep. And while it would be convenient to recommend a one-size-fits-all solution, there is no perfect CPAP mask for every patient. Instead, it’s dependent upon sleep style, comfort requirements and other individual needs.
There are multiple options for CPAP masks, but this guide breaks down the three main categories and provides the best tips for finding the perfect mask for you. Here is how to choose a CPAP mask, based on the types available and the way fellow patients have found the right fit.

Full Face Mask
The full face CPAP mask is likely what comes to mind when you think of the stereotypical mask, as it is the top choice for many patients. Full face masks are best suited to mouth breathers, patients who sleep on their backs and anyone whose sleep therapy requires high pressure settings. This is because the mask only touches the outer portion of the face, so it sits comfortably and disperses air pressure more evenly compared to other mask options. Interestingly, patients who experience claustrophobia also prefer a full face mask because it is non-invasive compared to nasal pillows and masks.
Patients should be aware that full face masks are susceptible to leakage due to the larger surface area, and usage is not conducive to wearing glasses or sleeping on one’s side or stomach.
Nasal Pillow
If the full face mask is not for you, you may find benefits from using a nasal pillow instead. Nasal pillows are more lightweight, giving users that like to read or watch TV before bed a greater field of vision. This CPAP mask style also gives you the ability to move around during sleep without risking leakage. This is a style most recommended to patients with a lot of facial hair—which could affect the fit of a full face mask—and patients who wear glasses because there is no material blocking the bridge of the nose.
The downsides of this style are mostly due to its setup of directing airflow straight into the nasal passage. High-pressure settings may feel uncomfortable and may cause nasal dryness or even nosebleeds.
Nasal Mask
Nasal masks are popular among CPAP users because of the wide range of styles and fits offered. The triangular shaped mask sits over the bridge of the nose and extends down to the upper lip, providing a more natural airflow than nasal pillows do. It’s held in place with suction properties, so it’s a good option for those who toss and turn during sleep.
Similar to the nasal pillows, nasal masks are not recommended for mouth breathers without the use of a chin strap to hold the jaw closed. It’s also not the best option for patients who suffer from allergies or difficulty breathing through the nose.
Tips for Finding the Right Mask
Many patients are fitted for a CPAP mask during a sleep study, which is designed to introduce them to CPAP therapy and using the machine. Though the staff will likely present you with popular masks, don’t be afraid to ask for different options and sizes. The right mask will sit comfortably on your face without shifting positions and will fit into your sleep style. Try to ensure you’re trying on masks in the most realistic settings to find the perfect fit in the least amount of time.
Accessories are another part of the mask-finding process that can make or break your experience with CPAP therapy. While some patients will need to use a chin strap with a nasal pillow/mask, others may need full headgear. There are plenty of accessories available to not only make compliance easier but also to provide extra comfort so you can get better sleep.
Most importantly, don’t settle for a mask that you hate. There’s a range of styles and sizes that can be tailored to your individual needs, but you have to address problems right away. Your quality of sleep is up to you and putting in extra effort to find the perfect CPAP mask is always worth it.
